The Story of Cummington Bowl

Thank you for visiting Cummington Bowl. All the pieces you see here are handmade by me, Fletcher. Everything is finished with foodsafe oils and waxes, unless otherwise noted. Every piece is one of a kind! Smaller bowls of a particular section of tree I will match shape, and they will be stackable. Larger bowls and other items are brought into being with a design based on the shape and grain of the wood, thus will be unique.

The wood I use in making bowls is all found, salvaged, or felled in and around the town of Cummington, in the Hilltowns of Western Massachusetts. With respect for the local environment, my focus is trees brought down naturally by old age or storms. This affords me the opportunity to works with some amazing woods, such as black cherry, old growth sugar maple, and yellow birch.

The artistry in wood turning is not only the crafting of the piece itself, but finding and working with the grain and shape of the wood in order to express these features in harmony with a finished bowl.
